An advocate for Illinois policyholders
Illinois property takes tornado, hail, and derecho damage in the warm months and freeze losses in the cold ones — a year-round claim environment. From the Chicago metro to the central farmland, the losses come in every season. UPA represents Illinois property owners across all of them — never the carrier.
Storms and losses we see across Illinois
Illinois faces the full range of Midwest severe weather. The August 2020 derecho that devastated Iowa also drove damaging straight-line winds across northern Illinois, and the state sees recurring tornado outbreaks each spring and summer, including violent tornadoes that have struck communities in the central and southern parts of the state. Hail large enough to destroy roofing is common in the warm season, and hard winters bring the deep freezes that burst pipes across older housing in Chicago and beyond.
UPA is licensed to serve policyholders in Illinois. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit public adjusting firm, and we never take a penny out of a property or business owner's pocket — our fee is covered by the overhead and profit built into the insurance settlement itself.
Why Illinois claims get underpaid
Illinois losses fail on scope and cause. Wind and derecho roof claims are written down to spot repairs when a full replacement is warranted, and hail claims run into matching and cosmetic-damage disputes. Winter pipe-burst claims turn on the sudden-versus-gradual distinction and whether heat was maintained, and in Chicago’s dense housing, water losses spread between units in ways a single-unit inspection misses.
Many Illinois policies carry separate wind/hail deductibles, and some include cosmetic-damage exclusions used to minimize hail dents. Frozen-pipe coverage frequently conditions on maintaining heat, sewer and drain backup often needs its own endorsement, and whether the policy pays actual cash value or replacement cost matters on aging roofs and buildings — so knowing which provisions apply before filing shapes the claim.
Built for Illinois conditions
Illinois’s building stock — Chicago’s brick multifamily and older frame housing, suburban subdivisions, and rural properties with outbuildings — produces loss patterns first-pass adjusters under-scope, especially hidden hail bruising, water travel between units in dense housing, and freeze damage in walls and unheated spaces that only surfaces when it fails.
